Holy Saturday – Our Lady of Holy Saturday
4 April
Holy Saturday stands as the quietest and most reflective day of the Christian year. Following the sorrow of Good Friday and before the joy of Easter, the Church enters a profound silence as it waits in hope for the Resurrection of the Lord.
The liturgy reflects this stillness. The altar remains bare, the tabernacle stands empty, and the church waits in quiet expectation. No Mass is celebrated during the day, and the Church invites the faithful to reflect deeply on the mystery of Christ’s death and burial.
As the Vatican reflection explains:
“Today, the Church is silent. The church bells do not ring, the Churches are stripped and silent. We are invited to unite ourselves with the Virgin Mother in expectation of the New Day. Today is a day to help us understand how to live in confident hope the ‘many other days’ of silence that life presents us along our journey. It is good to spend some time with Mary for this is the only way we can take up our journey again.”
Holy Saturday reminds Christians that the story of salvation unfolds not only through moments of triumph, but also through moments of waiting, uncertainty and silence. The disciples themselves experienced this day as one of confusion and grief. The One they had followed and loved had died on the cross, and they did not yet understand the glory that would soon be revealed.
Yet even in this silence, the work of redemption continues. The Church reflects on the mystery of Christ descending to the realm of the dead, bringing the light of salvation to those who had gone before Him.
