Thinking of becoming a Catholic?
At different moments in life, many people feel a quiet stirring of faith — a desire to draw closer to God, to belong to a community, or to understand more about what the Church believes. That small prompting of the heart is often the beginning of a journey. If you have ever wondered about the Catholic faith, or have been attending Mass and would like to explore what it means to become Catholic, the parish of St Charles Borromeo Church warmly invites you to join our forthcoming Becoming Catholic meetings.
These gatherings are open to everyone — whether you are completely new to the faith, have been baptised in another Christian tradition, or were baptised Catholic but never confirmed. Each session provides a welcoming space to ask questions, share experiences, and learn more about the life of the Church. There is no pressure or commitment at the beginning; it is simply an opportunity to explore, reflect, and discover.
The journey of becoming Catholic is known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Through prayer, discussion, and teaching, participants are gradually introduced to the beliefs and practices of the Church. Topics often include Scripture, the Sacraments, prayer, the meaning of the Mass, and the call to live as disciples of Christ in the modern world. Along the way, each person is supported by the parish community, by sponsors who accompany them in faith, and by the pastoral guidance of Father Philip Cunnah.
Many who take part describe the experience as life-changing. It is a time not only of learning but of deep encounter — with God, with others, and with one’s own sense of vocation. The process usually leads to the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism (if not already baptised), Confirmation, and Holy Communion at the Easter Vigil, one of the most beautiful celebrations in the Church’s year.
You may be someone who has been coming quietly to Mass for a while, feeling drawn but uncertain. You may have family or friends who are Catholic and wish to share more fully in their faith. Or perhaps you have been away from the Church for some years and feel it is time to come home. Wherever you find yourself, this invitation is for you.
Our new series of Becoming Catholic meetings will begin soon at St Charles Borromeo Church. Everyone is welcome to attend the first evening simply to listen and find out more. There is no obligation to continue — only an open door and a friendly community ready to walk with you on the journey of faith.
