RCIA - Becoming a Catholic
What is RCIA?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the journey by which adults come to know the Catholic faith and, if they choose, are received into the Church.
It is not simply a course. It is a period of prayer, learning, conversation and discernment. Some people are baptised at the end of the process. Others are already baptised Christians and are received into full communion. Some simply come to explore and ask questions.
RCIA respects where you are starting from.
A Warm Welcome
At St Charles Borromeo, Hull, RCIA is a welcoming, thoughtful and respectful journey.
You may be:

A Christian from another tradition

Simply curious and searching
You are welcome.
There is no pressure and no obligation. You are free to ask honest questions and take time to reflect.
What Happens in RCIA?
RCIA enquiries are welcome at any time.
The journey typically includes:
Regular gatherings
Scripture reflection
Teaching on Catholic belief and practice
Discussion and open questions
Introduction to prayer
Why Become Catholic?
People come for many reasons.
Some are drawn by:
A sense of spiritual hunger
The beauty and depth of the Mass
The continuity of faith from the Apostles
The Sacraments
The moral and spiritual teaching of the Church
A desire for a faith that is both ancient and alive
The Catholic Church understands itself as the Church founded by Christ and handed on through the Apostles. It offers:
A sacramental life centred on the Eucharist
A global family of faith
A rich intellectual tradition
A life of prayer rooted in Scripture
A call to serve others
Becoming Catholic is not about joining a club. It is about entering a living relationship with Christ within His Church.
Is RCIA Only for the Certain?
No.
RCIA is for seekers.
You do not need to have everything worked out. Faith grows through conversation, reflection and grace. The Church walks with you at your pace.
What Commitment Is Required?
Initially: simply come and explore.
As the journey progresses, there are moments of discernment. No one is rushed. Each step is taken freely.
