The Riddell Chalice Raised Once More at St Charles
At Mass on Sunday 13 September, the historic Riddell Chalice was once again raised at the altar of St Charles.
The chalice originally belonged to Fr Michael Trappes. Following his death in 1873, it was purchased from his estate by parishioners and presented to Arthur George Riddell when he left Hull for St Peter’s, Scarborough. Riddell later became Bishop of Northampton.
The chalice returned to St Charles in 1935, with provision for Mass to be offered “on or about 15 September” in remembrance of Bishop Riddell. Today that remembrance found its place once more in the worship of the parish community.
The remarkable story of the Riddell Chalice, pieced together from surviving parish documents, can be read in our full article.
Sign of the Times
Visitors and passers-by can now see our Mass times clearly displayed on the new sign outside St Charles. Weekday Mass is celebrated from Tuesday to Saturday at 12.10pm, with Sunday Mass at 10am and 6.10pm. The sign also includes a QR code which takes smartphone users straight to the parish website, where the latest news and any changes to the timetable can be found. It is a simple but valuable improvement, making our beautiful church a little more welcoming and accessible.
