Welcome to the historic
Saint Charles Borromeo
Catholic Church
in Kingston upon Hull
Explore parish life through our blog and stay connected with daily news and services from the diocese and the Vatican. Enjoy our photo galleries, helpful links, and shared resources. Most of all, we hope this space feels like an open door — a welcoming online home for parishioners, visitors, and anyone curious about the Catholic faith. Here you can discover our community, share in our life of prayer, and learn about the rich heritage of our historic church. Whether you are new, returning, or simply exploring, you are very welcome here. The plain frontage on Jarratt Street doesn’t give much away, but step inside and you’ll understand why people are often pleasantly surprised. Our church has been serving Hull’s Catholic community since 1829, through good times and difficult ones.
We’re ordinary people who gather here to pray, celebrate the sacraments, and support each other through whatever life brings. It’s been that way for nearly two centuries, and it continues today.
Whether you’re cradle Catholic or just curious, whether you’re celebrating or struggling, you’ll find your place here. This is where Hull’s Catholic story began, and it’s still unfolding through every person who walks through our doors.
O Come All Ye Faithful
Join us at Saint Charles Borromeo throughout December as we gather to celebrate the birth of Christ with joy, prayer and welcome. In this holy season, we come together to remember that God enters our world gently, offering hope, forgiveness and new beginnings. Whether you are a regular parishioner, returning after some time away, or simply curious, you are warmly invited to share in our liturgies, music, and quiet moments of reflection. Come and experience the light of the Nativity, the beauty of our community, and the peace that Christ brings to every heart open to receive Him
Silent Night
Throughout the Christmas season, the Church invites us to return again and again to the mystery of Christ’s birth — not only as a moment in the past, but as a living presence among us now. Silent Night has accompanied generations of Christians in that prayerful reflection, drawing us into the stillness, peace, and hope that flow from the coming of Christ into the world. This music is offered simply as a gentle accompaniment for reflection during the days of Christmas.
O Holy Night
The English text of O Holy Night reflects on the stillness and wonder of Christ’s birth beneath a starlit sky, portraying a world weary from sin and longing for redemption, suddenly illuminated by hope. It invites the listener into a moment of profound reverence, calling hearts to humility, prayer, and adoration before the mystery of the Incarnation. Beyond its tenderness, the hymn carries a powerful moral and social vision: it proclaims Christ as the one who breaks oppression, restores human dignity, and calls all people into true brotherhood. Pride is challenged, injustice is exposed, and love is presented not as sentiment but as a transforming force that unites humanity. In this way, O Holy Night is not only a Christmas carol but a reflection on the radical meaning of Christ’s coming — a birth that changes how we see God, ourselves, and one another.
